Kingspan’s Paul Bertram to lead The Construction Specifications Institute

Bertram will assume CSI presidency July 1

DELAND, FL (June 30, 2011) – Paul Bertram, FCSI, CDT, LEED AP and director, environment and sustainability for Kingspan Insulated Panels North America, a global manufacturer of insulated metal panels, will assume the presidency of The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) on July 1.

CSI is the construction community’s authority on communication and construction documentation. “CSI’s role is clear – to provide leadership in communicating, organizing and managing project information for the built environment,” said Bertram. “CSI’s diverse membership provides a unique platform where communication between disciplines, which is essential to whole building design, can be better realized than in any other industry. This leadership through collaborative efforts with other associations, code bodies and standards developing organizations provides integrated industry outcomes.”

Bertram joined CSI in 1991, and over the past 20 years he has served in numerous leadership positions at the local, regional and national levels. Currrently, he serves as chair of CSI’s GreenFormat Program Maintenance Task Team and is a member of the UniFormat Task Team and the organization’s Greater Orlando and District of Columbia Chapters. He is also a charter member of the Pennsylvania Railroad Chapter and for several years has served on the editorial advisory board for The Construction Specifier. Bertram’s past national service includes CSI’s Nominating and Education Committees and the Convention Advisory and Sustainable Facility Task Teams.

Bertram’s role at Kingspan includes work with several cutting-edge programs that represent new areas of interest for CSI, including material life cycle assessment and environmental reporting, energy modeling, various energy efficiency and sustainability standards development and high-performance building strategies.

“I’m excited that Paul is assuming the president’s role at CSI,” said CSI Executive Director and CEO Walter Marlowe, P.E., SCI, CAE. “Paul brings a track record of creativity and innovative ideas to the organization, along with a keen interest in implementing exciting new programs that will serve both our members and our industry.”

Bertram has earned numerous chapter-, regional- and Institute-level awards from CSI. Of note are the Greater Orlando Chapter’s Royce B. Howe Award, CSI’s Southeast Region’s Distinguished Service Award and a 2006 Institute President’s Plaque.

Kingspan products surround visitors in Elgin Barrow Arena

Renovated ice rink features Kingspan insulated metal wall panels and KingZip™ insulated standing seam roof system

DELAND, FL (June 21, 2011) – Elgin Barrow Arena, the first ice rink in the town of Richmond Hill, Ont., was constructed in 1923. Since then, the 71,750-square-foot, two-pad arena has undergone a number of facelifts and additions, including a recent $4 million renovation that provides increased accessibility, new lobby doors and flooring, renovated gender-appropriate dressing rooms and washrooms and upgrades that feature insulated metal panel wall and roof systems from Kingspan Insulated Panels North America, including the first installation in Canada of KingZip™ insulated standing seam roof system.

According to Nick Kalyvas, manager of facility assets for the town of Richmond Hill, the new roof replaces a steel roof that leaked. “However, the leak was not a result of the roof itself, but rather the exposed screws that penetrate through the roof and attach the roof to the steel structure underneath,” Kalyvas explained. “These screws are the Achilles heel of most steel roofs, because over time, the screws (and not the roof) corrode, resulting in multiple leaks long before the roof reaches its life expectancy. The screws require a lot of maintenance and even then, tend to corrode.”

So when Kingspan introduced KingZip™, an insulated standing seam roof system that features concealed screws and fasteners, Kalyvas was intrigued. “The design of the KingZip product is such that nothing is exposed, increasing the longevity of the roof while decreasing the required maintenance,” he said. “It’s basically maintenance free.”

Just as important, KingZip insulated metal roof systems provide high levels of thermal value and air-tight performance, which is especially important in an ice arena, where rink temperatures must be maintained at 13 degrees C/55 degrees F, even during the heat of the summer. The roof’s standing seam design along with a hidden fastener clip assembly ensure an air- and weather-tight system that reduces the building’s operational energy demands along with its carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, KingZip’s insulating core provides superior thermal performance with tested

R-values of up to 48. Because the insulation is exterior to the building structure, it provides the best possible thermal envelope by reducing thermal bridging typical of cavity insulation systems. In addition, the panels feature excellent foam-to-foam contact, which provides an unbroken thermal shield against heat transfer.

This single-component system also appealed to Blair Jurecka, associate at Jurecka + Associates Architects Inc., Toronto. As project manager of the renovation, Jurecka specified the KingZip roof system for the arena.

“The insulated value of the roof was certainly important to the facility,” she said. “But the single-component feature was significant too, because it offered ease of installation – a real benefit in a project like this one that had a tight timeline.”

Brian Jamieson, vice president – production at Bothwell-Accurate, Inc., the company that installed the roof and wall systems, agrees. “I would classify this roof panel as one of the best in the market, beginning with how easily the system goes together,” he said. “I’m also impressed with the waterproofing ability of the system, the panel length, which is impressive, and the exterior and interior finish of the panels. I understand that this was the first structure in Canada to use the KingZip system, and from our very positive experience with the product, I’d use it on another project in a minute.”

The renovated arena also features Kingspan insulated metal wall panels, replacing a deteriorated component system that consisted of aluminum panels, insulation and liners. “Like the roof system, the single-component wall system appealed to me for a number of reasons,” said Jurecka. “It offers the insulating value that an ice arena requires and the speed of installation that the construction schedule demanded.”

The Kingspan Micro-Rib wall system features continuous foamed-in-place polyisocyanurate insulation and a double tongue and groove interlocking rainscreen joint design with a hidden fastener anchorage that affords the connection of both metal skins to the building structure. A caulk seal provision provides an excellent vapor, air and water vapor barrier, further enhancing the thermal performance of the panel.

“And it’s easy to install,” Jamieson added. “Some wall systems require multiple layers plus the installation of insulation. This system is such that when a panel goes up, it’s complete. No other layers or insulation are needed, significantly speeding the installation time and ensuring a consistent product.”

Jurecka was also impressed with the appearance of the wall system. “In terms of detailing, it’s a much more elegant system,” she noted. “And I liked the profile. The arena has a very large, uninterrupted wall with just a few doors, so I wanted to give it some visual interest. The profile we selected provided that interest and was available in a champagne pearl color.”

Micro-Rib factory-assembled wall systems create an attractive linear appearance with subtle shadows. Panels can be horizontally or vertically applied and feature high-performance coatings in a wide spectrum of colors that provide long-life protection, color and gloss retention.

For Kalyvas, the end result is both pleasing to look at and highly functional. “We know we have a quality installation, just from the way the metal wall and roofing systems fit together and the insulating value they offer. So, the arena is definitely more energy efficient than it was in the past. But it also looks good, both inside and out. We had many options to choose from in terms of finishes and ended up with a building that is both inviting and efficient, one that will serve the Richmond Hill community well into the future.”

Kingspan Insulated Panels North America Introduces New Design Manual for Kingspan Benchmark Architectural Products

Unique manual is available in electronic and print formats

DELAND, FL (February 15, 2011) – Kingspan Insulated Panels North America, a global manufacturer of insulated metal panels, recently introduced a new design manual for Kingspan Benchmark architectural products that consolidates product literature and information in a single, easy-to-use resource. The unique, 248-page manual is available in two formats – electronic and print – to assist design professionals in the selection, specification and installation of Kingspan Benchmark insulated wall panels and integrated window systems, column and beam covers, louvers and sunshades.

“I am very impressed by the manual, as it is able to communicate technical information with simple, graphically-rich explanations,” said David Adler, studio principle, AIA LEED AP, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, Durham, N.C. “This manual will be my go-to resource for insulated metal panel design.”

The new manual reflects the design capabilities of Kingspan Benchmark products, incorporating three-dimensional isometric construction details, case studies and product specifications. Product and application photographs throughout the manual demonstrate the integration of profiles, colors, module widths, custom corners, radius options, variable reveals, window column and beam colors, louvers and sunshades and grills.

In addition, the manual’s intuitive design makes it easy to locate product information, MasterFormat specifications, testing and approval materials, and build speed and thermal performance criteria, at a time when information related to sustainability and the building envelope is often critical to the work of design professionals.

A series of photographs on the home page welcomes visitors to the sites and illustrates the versatility of Kingspan products and the contributions they make to innovative building design. The Project Gallery provides additional imagery and detailed information about featured projects, which are grouped according to products and market sector. Each project description identifies the projects’ unique challenges and the solutions that Kingspan delivered.

The comprehensive Product section groups the broad array of Kingspan products according to product line. Selecting a specific product gives website users access to all the information they require, including detailed product specifications and the features and benefits that make each Kingspan product unique. In addition, the Resource Library, also accessible on the main navigation bar, offers product color cards, literature and whitepapers as well as construction details, installation guides and technical information. Users can also access the Project Gallery from this section and review the product in recent installations.

Visitors to the sites can download the latest technical information by joining TechSource. Featured prominently on the home page, TechSource is a repository of CAD details, new CSI MasterFormat™ specifications and installation guides.

“We created this new area on our websites in response to research and feedback we received from the design community,” noted Foody. “TechSource delivers added value to the sites by equipping those who specify and install Kingspan products with the technical details they require to complete their work in a successful and timely manner.”

The home page also features Kingspan TV, a collection of tradeshow and installation videos as well as other promotional clips, such as the Kingspan Sustainability animation. Taking advantage of social media outlets, Kingspan TV also connects visitors to Kingspan’s YouTube channel. In addition, the new sites invite visitors to follow Kingspan on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

The sites also feature a Sustainability section. Content in this area articulates Kingspan’s commitment to sustainability, green buildings and green business practices, including information on how Kingspan insulated panels support LEED® certification, the Path to NetZero and Kingspan’s EnvelopeFirst™ green design practice.

In addition to requesting installation training, product samples and literature, visitors to the sites can locate their nearest Kingspan sales rep by selecting a product line and the appropriate state or province.

Kingspan will launch a third new site for Morin, another Kingspan Group Company, later this year.

To view the new Kingspan sites, visit http://www.kingspanpanels.us/ and /.

About Kingspan Insulated Panels North America
Kingspan Insulated Panels North America is a global leader in the manufacturing of insulated metal panels, providing unsurpassed service to U.S. and Canadian markets as well as export destinations. DELAND, FL (October 4, 2010) – Kingspan Insulated Panels, a global manufacturer of insulated metal panels, will showcase their KingZip™ Insulated Standing Seam Roof System at booth #1217 during METALCON International 2010, Oct. 20-22 in Las Vegas, Nev. In addition, Paul Bertram, Jr., FCSI, CDT, LEED AP, director, environment and sustainability at Kingspan Insulated Panels, is scheduled to speak on Oct. 21 at 10:15 a.m., detailing the process for LEED® submittals.

The Kingspan booth will feature roofing product KingZip™ Insulated Standing Seam Roof System, which is designed to help buildings achieve LEED® certification and increase the speed of build. KingZip™ is a pre-engineered, zip-up roofing system that provides enhanced performance, design flexibility and aesthetic appeal, while reducing on-site construction time. Providing high levels of thermal (R-value) and airtightness performance throughout the service life of the building, KingZip™ contributes to the achievement of net-zero energy building goals and LEED® project certification. Also on display will be the Kingspan Benchmark Designwall Series™ of architectural panels

“We are thrilled to be exhibiting and presenting at METALCON this year,” said Jeff Irwin, CEO of Kingspan Benchmark and president of the Metal Construction Association (MCA). “The mission of MCA is to expand the use of metal in construction through marketing, technology, and education, and I’m proud that we at Kingspan are helping to achieve this mission.”

Addressing attendees in a presentation titled: “Everything’s Green Except My Submittals: Understanding Documentation Responsibilities of Green Products in Your Projects,” Paul Bertram will review green product information, including product labels, third party certifications and product attributes required for LEED® submittals. Paul’s presentation will also review life-cycle assessment and how it is addressed in new building codes.

“We are excited to participate at METALCON this year and highlight our focus on the roofing market,” said Bertram.” At Kingspan, we understand the importance of sustainability, and as a result our products are designed to optimize energy performance. Specifying green products can be a very daunting task, due to the sheer number of offerings available, so I am honored to present this topic and arm attendees with the knowledge of how to communicate and understand environmental project requirements.”

Kingspan will also be part of the METALCON 20th Anniversary Mobile Challenge, organized by METALCON and SCVNGR, a Google-funded technology company. This scavenger hunt will have attendees visiting booths to complete various challenges for the grand prize of an iPad. Kingspan will also award an iPad to the most creative response to their challenge.

Kingspan Insulated Panels Announces Integration of Canadian and US Businesses

Kingspan Insulated Panels Announces Integration of Canadian and US Businesses
